Setup guide

Get watching in 4 steps

Takes about 5 minutes. Once it's set up you won't need to touch it again.

Create a free Plex account

Go to plex.tv and sign up with an email. Totally free — no credit card needed to watch from a home server.

Download the Plex app

Install Plex on whatever you want to watch on. Search "Plex" in the App Store, Google Play, Apple TV App Store, Roku Channel Store, etc. There's also a web player at app.plex.tv if you don't want to install anything.

💡 Streaming from a home server is free on mobile — no Plex Pass needed.

Find the HomeBase server

Sign in to Plex, then look in the left sidebar under "More" or "Discover." You should see HomeBase listed as a server. Click on it to browse the library.

🔑 If you don't see it, shoot me a message — I may need to share the library with your account first.

Hit play 🍟

Browse by movie, TV show, genre, or search for something specific. If something you want isn't there, just ask and I'll add it.

If creating a Plex account feels like too much hassle, you can use the shared guest login. Just keep in mind it's shared — so keep it simple.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to pay for anything?

Nope. Creating a Plex account and watching from a personal server is free. You might see upsells for "Plex Pass" — you don't need it. Just ignore those.

Will it work on my TV?

Almost certainly yes. Plex runs on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, most Samsung and LG Smart TVs, PS4/PS5, Xbox, and more. Search "Plex" in your TV's app store.

The video quality seems low or it's buffering. What do I do?

Plex adjusts quality based on your connection. If you're on WiFi and it's still choppy, try going into the video player settings and manually setting quality to "Original" or "Maximum." If it's still bad, let me know.

Can I request a movie or show?

Yes! That's basically the whole point. Just text me what you want and I'll get it added, usually pretty quickly.

What if I can't see the server or it's offline?

Text me and I'll fix it. The Mac mini runs 24/7 but occasionally needs a reboot or the internet hiccups. Usually back up within minutes.
